FOLK TRADITIONS


Folk traditions are alive and well. AlI year long visitors have many occasions to appreciate the wealth of our cultural heritage. In addition to the celebrations and holidays in common with Metropolitan France. the people of Guadeloupe celebrate a great number of festivals centered around the patron saints with enthusiasm and joy (each commune has its own patron saint). There are other events specific to Guadeloupe as weIl : Carnival, with its magnificent ox-cart parade, The Women Chefs Festival (La Fête des Cuisinières). the Indian Festivals. and the Cock Fights. etc.

Holidays :

January: Epiphany, 1str Sunday of Carnival.

February: 3rd week of carnival, parades and musical groups.

Mars: Regatta, ULM Rally

April: Easter, Creole gastronomy festival.

May: Labor Day, the markets offer their most beautiful fruits.

June (27th): Celebration of the abolition of slavery.

July (14th): National Holiday

August: Village feasting, bicycle race "Tour de la Guadeloupe".

September: Oxcart pulling competition.

November (1st): All Saints : the tombs of the cemeteries are illuminated with candles

December (24th): Christmas, decorated streets.
